Malleval and the vineyards of the Pilat rhodanien

Perched high on a rocky spur overlooking the Gorges du Batalon et de l’Epervier, this old fortified village used to control the road from the Rhône valley to Le Forez and the Auvergne. It is dominated by the ruins of two châteaux, and a church dating back to the XIth century.

For evidence of the thriving past of this small medieval village, look no further than the delights of the salt store, the Maison du Beffroi, the old court of justice and the prebendary house.

Malleval is first and foremost a wine-growing village and well worth a visit - wander down the numerous lanes that offer a variety of views of the slopes where the famous AOC Saint-Joseph and Condrieu wines are produced.
