Château d'Essalois et Centre d'Interprétation des Gorges de la Loire

Overlooking the Loire River, the Château d’Essalois is part of the Gorges de la Loire designated historic site. The earliest written records mentioning the castle date back to the 14th century. Of unknown origin, the castle underwent various phases of construction over the centuries, giving it its current eclectic architectural style. From the castle courtyard, enjoy a magnificent 360° panoramic view of the Loire Gorges and the Forez Plain. Hiking trails and a marked GR de Pays trail allow you to explore this remarkable site. A guidebook is available for purchase at the Loire Forez tourist office. Dining options are available nearby. A family-friendly walk leads to the castle (stroller-accessible). Free admission (except for guided tours) Since 2021, the Château d’Essalois has housed the Loire Gorges Interpretation Center, a modern educational space where visitors can learn about the heritage of the Loire Gorges and the EDF hydroelectric facility at Grangent.
