Marols is a thousand-year-old town built around its hamlets. From its fortified church in the heart of the town to the beautifully restored Domaine de Valinches, residents and the many visitors have more than 15 km² at their disposal to enjoy and gather. This remarkable heritage has earned it a place among the department’s first “villages of character” and a star in the Michelin Green Guide. In 2025, the village will gain a new nature area: the Loire Valley’s first “sylvetum,” spanning 8 hectares, will invite visitors to explore a fun and educational trail. An outdoor classroom (set in a magical setting) will be established to welcome children from the village school and neighboring towns. Today, this rich history is complemented by numerous events that make Marols an unmissable destination throughout the year. From its hiking trails to its famous Christmas market on the first Sunday in December, there’s always a reason to visit. The “Moissons de Cultures” cultural season, featuring a wealth of exhibitions, concerts, a biennial craft fair, and a pottery festival;a market featuring local artisans has been held since 2024, and other summer events complement the artists’ studios dotted throughout the village, all set against this perfect backdrop, accompanied by the voices of the children from the one-room schoolhouse that mark the passing of the seasons. Marols has a soul. Thanks to its residents, elected officials, and volunteers, Marols’ character is evident. This village has succeeded, as very few have, in preserving its medieval heritage. A tranquil, good-natured way of life at the heart of breathtaking natural landscapes, skies, trails, and hamlets… where everyone pursues their passions with care and respect. Perched high up yet close to everything, along the gentle, scenic road from Montbrison to Saint-Bonnet-le-Château, Marols in Haut Forez—already part of Auvergne—thrives on its natural surroundings and its people, each in their own way an artist in this charming village that so captivates visitors. From “getting some fresh air”—by which we mean seasonal residents—we’ve chosen Marols as our permanent home. An exquisite tranquility that must be earned and built upon every day. Max Rivière, known as Combraille, the village writer.
